Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that people who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing these drugs should be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Experts propose the mechanism of the injections explains the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you become ravenous," said a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Use

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
